The ATDP Program at UC Berkeley is an elementary and secondary summer school for students who ready and and willing to push beyond their preconceived academic abilities. I am teaching the Writing Process- a class that has focused on creative and analytical writing strategies based on the several works including Harper Lee’s- To Kill A Mockingbird, Arturo Islas’- The Rain God, Sandra Cisneros’- The House on Mango Street, as well as selected works from Pablo Neruda, Amy Tan, Langston Hughes, Isabel Allende, and of course, Waterson’s Calvin and Hobbes!
We are currently finishing the fourth week of classes and the students have just completed an analytical essay responding to Lee’s, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” The following link is a slideshow presenting their Literature Maps that represented their understanding of the vaious analytical rems we have been studying in this class including: Subject, Setting, Character, Theme, Conflict, Tone, Exposition, etc. Please check out their amazing work and feel free to post comments as a way to further their appreciation of how their audience, known and unknown, interprets what they are creating. Enjoy!
