Hello 9th Grade,
I hope you enjoy reading Like Water For Chocolate! Over the next few weeks, your online assignment will be to post chapter summaries. I have completed the first two chapters as an example of what I expect you to do! This weekend, you have the choice to write a summary for either Chapter #3 OR Chapter #4. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WRITE A SUMMARY FOR BOTH! This is due by Monday Morning at 8:00 a.m. Please choose only one chapter- The chapter that you feel most comfortable summarizing! The following are my summaries that include an explanation of the main example of Magical Realism in each chapter. Enjoy!
-Like Water For Chocolate-
Chapter 1, January- Christmas Rolls
The story begins with the narrator Tita, Esperanza’s daughter – Rosaura’s granddaughter – the protagonist’s great-niece, telling us that she is especially sensitive to onions just like her great aunt Tita. Her great-aunt reportedly cried in the womb and was born on a wave of tears in the kitchen. From then on, the kitchen was Tita’s domain and her life would revolve around the preparation of food for her family. When Tita was a young girl, she was very close to Nacha- the family cook-, playing games and even shaping the sausage they made into the shapes of animals, and she looked to her as a mother figure.
From Nacha, Tita learned the secret skills and recipes of cooking and it represented everything Tita loved about her life at home. This included the magical rituals of the sausage making, the rising of the yeast, the raising of animals, the use of all sorts of natural ingredients and, of course, the closeness that develops between women who work together in the kitchen.
One day, when most of the women were in the kitchen, Pedro Muzquiz came to ask for permission to marry Tita. Tita’s mother, Mama Elena, had warned her not to encourage him to ask for her hand. Tradition prohibits the youngest daughter from marrying so that she will always be available to take care of her elderly mother.
When Pedro came, Mama Elena surprised everyone when she offered her oldest daughter, Rosaura, instead of Tita for marriage. Chencha was the first to tell Tita but Tita did not want to believe it. Later, Mama Elena seemed to enjoy telling Tita the shocking. Nacha tells Tita about the conversation she overheard between Pedro and his father: Pedro explained that if he could not have Tita, the woman he truly loves, then he must marry her sister so that, “at least he could be close to her.”
Chapter #1 begins quickly describing the story’s subject, setting, conflict, tone and themes. The traumatic news broke Tita’s heart on the family’s ranch close to Piedras Negras, Coahuila during the Mexican Revolution. There is passion, tears and, of course, traditional food. The characters are all very strong women and there doesn’t seem to be any men in the family, except Pedro. The main example of Magical Realism is the story of Tita’s Birth on the kitchen table.
Chapter 2, February- Chabela Wedding Cake
As Tita and Nacha prepare the wedding cake for Rosaura’s marriage to Pedro, Tita is overwhelmed with her emotions. They need use 170 eggs to make the cake but as they pass the 100-egg mark, Tita’s hands begin to shake because can no longer hide her fury and anger that her sister marrying her boyfriend. Mama Elena is very cruel and shows no sympathy when she tells Tita that she will not tolerate any outburst and warns her to behave. Tita continues to beat the cake but cannot help crying into the cake batter. Nacha understands Tita’s situation and, noticing Tita’s tears falling into the batter, tells her to go to bed for fear that the cake will never be ready.
They are able to finish the cake with its apricot filling and meringue frosting but Tita is so sad that isn’t sure she will be able to get through the wedding! Tita feels better after Pedro tells her that she is the woman he really loves during a private moment at the reception. Tita is so happy that she doesn’t notice that the guests are crying over their lost loves after eating the cake. Tita leaves to tell Nacha about her conversation with Pedro but finds her dead in her own bed.
In chapter #2, Tita is forced to watch her boyfriend marry her sister while she must prepare the wedding feast, the enormous cake and special frosting. Mama Elena continues to abuse and oppress Tita and tells her that she will not tolerate one moment of self-pity. The big example of Magical Realism in this chapter is when Tita’s crying into the cake batter affects everyone at the wedding banquet with longing and remorse for lost loves. The response is so powerful that they become physically sick and Tita is the only one unaffected by the strange sickness.

Summary chapter # 3 March Quail in Rose Petal Sauce
After the marriage between Pedro and Rosaura and the death of Nacha, Tita comes to be the only domain of the kitchen and she comforts herself by preparing elaborate dishes. One day Pedro gave to Tita some roses with this excuse that Tita had one year as the cook of the ranch but I think Tita and Pedro knew that the roses was like the symbol of the love that they feel each other. With the roses Tita prepared quail in rose petal sauce. One more time Tita transmitted her feelings into the meal and every body could felt its effects. In special the intense effect in Gertrudis who was the intermediate of this intense and extremely passion between Tita and Pedro. When the meal is complete, Gertrudis goes to prepare a shower to rid her of the pink sweat and rose aroma she emits. The profound sexual connection that Gertrudis felt makes her beings crazy of love and makes the shower to explode. Fleeing naked from the burning shower, Gertrudis is scooped up onto a galloping horse by a soldier of the revolution, who was drawn to the area by her scent. The soldier and Gertrudis ride off. Tita lies to her mom saying that the soldiers of the revolution robbed Gertrudis and unable to follow the path of Gertrudis, Tita is left on the ranch.

Well, in my opinion the book LWFC is a very interesting book, for people that’s in love (like me). Chapter 3 is a very hot chapter, and a very exited chapter. It has some scenes that littles kids shouldnt hear.
Chapter 3 is about emotions that people feel and cant do nothing to control themselfs, and things happend at that moment. Pedro gave Tita some roses, there was a so strong conection between Tita and Pedro that the roses were the way of comunicating that feeling. Tita decided to use those roses to prepare a food called Quail in Rose Petal Sauce. Tita transmitted her feeling toward Pedro in that meal, so at the moment of eating that meal everyone got exited. But the one that couldnt resist was Gertrudis. She got all crazy and she even ran away with a soldier that saw her running naked. (i think she lost her virginity with that soldier) Anyway, that’s all i remember from this chapter.

These are both EXCELLENT COMMENTS and exactly what I wanted to see in your summaries- Great Job Yuridia and Araceli!
I like how Yuridia said, “One more time Tita transmitted her feelings into the meal and every body could felt its effects.”
Araceli has another great statement when she says, “Tita transmitted her feeling toward Pedro in that meal, so at the moment of eating that meal everyone got exited. But the one that couldn’t resist was Gertrudis.”
These are both exceptional ways to describe the Magical Realism in this chapter. VERY NICE- Go, Girls, Go!

Chapter Three
March
Quail in Rose Petal Sauce
First of all, I think that this paragraph is very important in chapter three:¨Remove the petals carefully from the roses, trying not to prick your fingers, for not only are the little wounds painful but the petals could soak up blood that might alter the flavor of the dish and even produce dangerous chemical ractions¨.
Pedro is married with Tita´s sister Rosaura, but Pedro love Tita. Pedro gave her roses to Tita confirming his love, trying to hide from everyone´s prying eyes especially from Mama Elena´s. because Nacha is dead Tita is the best qualified of all women in the house to fill the vacant post in the kitchen. Her unfurnatelly death had Tita in a very deep depression because Nacha was like her real mother. When Tita saw Pedro going to Rosaura´s room Tita clapse the roses to her chest so tightly that she start bliding, the roses, wich had been pink, had turn quite red from the blood that was flowing from Tita from Tita´s hands and breast. The roses were so beautiful that Tita couln´t trow them away. Tita a so exited with the roses that she thought that she can do a dish, but she didin´t have a recipe with rose petals, all at once she seemed to hear Nacha´s voice dictating a recipe and the only bird they have was quail. without a second she went to the patio to catch some quails, when she got 6 she went to the kitchen to kill them. The quail must be dry-plucked because putting them in boiling water affetcs their flavor. Rosaura wanted nothing to do with any kind of culinary activity. one day she decide to prepare a dish for the family but it was her first time cooking Rosaura asked Tita to leave her alone in the kitchen when she serve the meal the rice was obviosly scorched , the meat dried out, the dessert burnt, of course, that afternoon the entire family felt sick to their stomachs. every one was nervous of Tita´s meal, when Pedro tasted the food he said: ¨It is a dish for the gods!¨ Mama Elena knew that the quail was exquisite but she said: ¨It is too salty¨
meanwhile, Gertrudis feels and intense heat an itch in the center of her body. She began to sweat imagening herself naked on a horseback with her arms clapsed around one of pancho villa´s men. With that meal it seemed they have a new form to communicate in wich Tita was the transmitter, Pedro the receiver and poor Gertrudis the medioum of the intense pasion, love and feelings of Tita to Pedro her love, Tita was an especialist of making dishes that transmitted her feelings to every body who taste her dishes. Gertrudis ran to take a shower, but she had to fill the tank. The poor thing climbed up and down ten times, carrying buckets of water, because the drops that fekk from the shower never made it to his body: they evaporate before they rached her. Her body was giving off so much heat that the wooden walls began to split and burst into flames. Gertrudis though she would burnt to death that she start runing naked into the fields one of pancho Villa´s men was there watchig the perfection of her virginal body and he took her away in his horse bothe naked and making love with that intense love and passion the Tita feels for Pedro.

Chapter 3
I decided to choose this chapter because it’s a lot more easier than the other one and because it has more interesting things in it than chapter 4.
As we all know, Tita has a special way of demonstrating her feelings in the food that she makes. This time she did it through a food that includes roses(roses is a simbol of love). Everything started when Pedro gave Tita some roses. She used those roses to prepare a food that is called Quail in Rose Petal Sauce. Tita and Pedro felt so much love that they couldnt resist being away from each other. All those feelings made a special effect in the people who ate this dish. Most of the effect was upon Gertrudis. She felt so much heat in her body that she needed to take a shower. But the heat of her body was too much for the water, it was like pouring two drops of water in a huge building on fire. Gertrudis was so hot that she ran outside naked, by her way she found a soldier. This soldier grabed her and took her away with him in a horse. While they were over the horse, they were making love. This was a way of expressing the feelings that Tita and Pedro felt for each other.

Chapter 3
Quail in Rose Petal Sauce
I chose this chapter because i think it is one of the most easiest paragraph to understand. this chapter is all about the things that happened after Pedro & Rousaura’s wedding and after Nacha’s death. after these things Tita was the only one that was cooking and one day Pedro gave her some roses telling her that she had been cooking for them for one whole year and Tita used those roses to make the “Quail in Rose Petal Sauce” and when getrudis was eating that she felt something weird between her legs and she went running to take a shower and when she was taking a shower an essence was coming out from her body and this attracted the attention of a man and this man went to the place where she was taking a shower and they together feel like and attraction and the man took getrudis naked like she was and he put her in his horse and they went together!!!!!! i think this is a good summary for this chapter !!!!!

Chapter #3
“Quail in Rose Petal Sauce”
I think that this chapter is the most exiting part of the book LWFC. This chapter is all about the things that happened after Pedro & Rosaura’s wedding, and after Nacha’s death. So after that Tita was the responsible to make food. Tita was cooking and Pedro appears at the door of the kicking, he brought a docent of beautiful pink roses that when she took with her hands and breast she start blinding and the roses get red. During the diner Gertrudis get excited, and she went to get a shawer because she feel a heat that she culdn’t resist, she ran naked like she have never in her life. A soldier was galoping in his hourse and he saw her runing naked and he took her in his hourse, and what was supost to happened happened during their adventure.

Well, I chose this chapter because it has part of the main conflict that is about the imposible love of Tita an Pedro. This love is imposible because mama Elena wanted to marry Rosaura and Pedro but was in loved with Tita. After Pedro and Rosaura got marry Tita began to suffer. Also when Tita cooked the quail and Gertrudis proved she got exated. Maybe she got exited because Tita was in loved with Pedro and maybe Tita wanted to make him exited. Now I am going to give my opinion about this chapter. I think that anybody can order you to get marry with a person you do not love. Your mother can just advise you but she can not order you. In conclusion, love is related with recepies in “like water for chocolate”.

chapter#4
“Turkey mole with Almonds and sesame seeds”
I going to make a summary about chapter number four because I think this is one of most important chapter of the book. For the ranch was celebrating an important even: the baptism of her nephew, first son of Pedro and Rosaura.this event warranted a grand meal with mole. She had had a special set of earthenware dishes made for the occasion with the name ROBERTO on, for that is what they had named the beuutiful baby, on whom all the family and friends were lavishing gifts and attetion. she was really excited as she started to prepare the mole the day before the baptism. I think that Tita said that she was so excited for the baptism because it was just the baptism of her sister’s son. But if the food was her sister’s marriage with the man that she loves she will do the it with too mush sadness because she is making other people feel happy but she is keeping with the sadness by the man she loves.

Chapter #3
“Quail in Rose Petal Sauce”
I chose this Chapter because I think this is the most important one. It shows one of the main ideas of the book, which is Magical Realism, some others chapters show examples of Magical Realism, but for me this is the most appropriated one, because it shows a perfect, detailed and interesting example of Magical Realism.
This Chapter talks about when Tita made that delicious dish made it from the Roses Pedro gave to Tita expressing his full love for her. Mama Elena didn’t want Tita to have any single thing that reminds her about Pedro and that’s why, Mama Elena ask Tita cruelly to throw those roses away. Then, Tita resisted to Mama Elena and she didn’t want to throw them away but she realized she couldn’t keep hiding them all the time so she thought in mixing them with a delicious plate to make an incomparable dish never tasted it from someone else made with a totally love dedicated to Pedro.
Finally, everybody was in the main kitchen eating that incomparable dish, but suddenly Gertrudis started feeling a strange itch in the middle of her body and a big heat coming from the top of her head to the bottom of her feet. She couldn’t resist and she went directly to the bathroom to take a bath as soon as possible, but to do that she had to carry a big bottle full of water in each hand for ten times to fill the whole tank and that way water could come out from tank directly to the bathroom. But that was impossible, she couldn’t wait one minute more and she took all her clothes off and she went out to backyard to get some air and the only thing she found was a man on his horse waiting for her burning in flames. Gertrudis and Pancho Villa’s soldier left together making love, and trying about some true love.

FIRST OF ALL THE CHAPTER THAT I CHOOSE IS THE CHAPTER 3…FIRST BECAIUSE I AM MORE REALLETED MORE WITH THIS CHAPTERS THAN THE OTHERS ONES THATS WHAY I CHOOSE THIS CHAPTER.
SECOND, BECAUSE THIS IS AN EXPLE OF MAJICAL REALISM THE WHAY THAT GERTUDIS WAS EXITEMENT IT IS IMPOSIBLE TO VELIEF BUT FOR ME THIS CHAPTER IS SAD BUT AT THE SAME TIME IS COOL BUT SOMTHING THAT I DONT LIKE ABOUT THIS CHAPTER OR ALL THE BOOK IT BECAUSE IT IS KING OF BORRIE BECAUSE, SOME TIME IT ONLY TALK ABOUT FOOD, SEX, AND THE LIFE OF PEDRO AND TITA.
I WILL CHOOSE THE LAS CHAPTER IN DICEMBER,IT WAS TOO SAD BECAUSE ALL THE FAMILY DIE INCLUDING MAMA ELENA,PEDRO,TITA,NACHA,RABERTO AND ROSAURA DIE IS LIKE THE FAMILY WAS KIND OF WEIRD BECAUSE ONE BY ONE EACH OF THE FAMILI WERE DIING.
ATHORTER THING THAT I DONT LIKE ABOUT THE CHAPTER IS THAT HOW COULD BE THAT IF SHE DIE ALL THE FAMILIE WOULD DIE AT THE NEXT DAY THAT WAS KIND OF WIERD CHAPTER.
PEDRO DIE BECAUSE HE WAS TOO EXTEMENT AND HE WAS DING LOVE WITH TITA THAT’S WHAY.
TITA DIE BECAUSE SHE START TO RENBEMBER MANI THINGS LIKE THAT FIRST TIME THAT SHE MAKE LOVE FOR THE FIRST TIME THAT PEDRO ND TITA MAKE LOVE FOR THA FIRST TIME.
THAT WAS THE UGLY PART BECAUSE THEY BOTH DIE.
ALEX AND ESPERANZA GET MERRIE AND JHON DONT GET MARRIE WITH TITA ALL THE STPORY WAS UGLY
FINALLY, THIS STORI WAS WIRD BUT at the same time cool.
But it was a cool experience to read a book like this.

CHAPTER # 3
“Quail in Rose Petal Sauce”
I decided to chose chapter 3, because its talking about “LOVE”,because a lot of people are inlove, and a lot of people feel how they feeling too. I think this part is the most interesting. But her own mother wont let her to love the guy that she wants.
Tita made some delicious dish made it from the Roses Pedro gave to Tita expressing his full love for her. But Mama Elena didn’t want tita to express her love to Pedro. Mama elena ask her to throw it away. But she thinks that if she will trow the roses it will be a waste. She realize that she cant keep all the time. So she did, she mixed on the delicous food that no one cant do it, because Tita and Pedro make some love.
When everybody is inside of the kitchen they all taste the food that Tita cook. Suddenly, Gertrudis start to feel strange itchy in the middle of her body like a big heat. When she couldn’t resist, she went to the bathroom, but she needs to carry a big bottle full of water in each hand for ten times. She couldn’t wait one more minute, she took all the clothes off, she went to the backyard to get some air and the Pancho Villa’s soldier saw her.. (I think they did some making love).

Chapter #3 – March
(Quail In Rose Petal Sauce)
I think this chapter could be one of the most important of the book, because it tells you about some examples of the Magical Realism that supposedly happened to Gertrudis in this chapter.
In this chapter you can see how Tita cook a very delicious dish from the roses that Pedro gave to her to express his love for Tita and tell her that she was the only woman in his heart, but in this chapter you can also see what effects did this dish made to Gertrudis, and many examples of Magical Realism. One of those examples is when Gertrudis was eating that delicious dish that Tita made, and she began to feel an intense heat pulsing through her limbs. I think this is an example of Magical Realism, because I don’t think it’s possible that someone can act as an aphrodisiac person just because that person ate a delicious dish.

CHAPTER #3 QUAIL IN ROSE PETAL ROSE
This chapter is about the love that Pedro has to Tita represented by Roses. Pedro gave Tita bouquet of roses. Tita was very happy that she didn’t want to trow the roses away. So she did a recipe of the flower so she can keep the present that Pedro gave her. And Mama Elena will not know about the flowers and the love of Pedro. When Tita clasped the roses to her chest so tightly, the roses, which has been mostly pink had turned quite red from the blood that was flowing from Tita’s hands and breasts. When she was doing this meal she did it with love. When the family ate the food that Tita had cooked, everybody felt sick to their stomachs.Tita had added an extra ingredient, she had added her blood and the roses from Pedro proved quite an explosive combination. Gertrudis was very strange, I think that the love of Tita with Pedro got into Gertrudis .Gertrudis went to take a bath. first she had to carry buckets of water.so she can take the shower. the problem was that she never tasted the water because she was so hot that the water coverted to vapor. she almost burn the enclosure. she thought that she will burn herself so she ran away naked. The scent of roses given off by her body had traveled a long way. one of Pancho villa soldiers smell this aroma. the man went to look for Gertrudis. finally he found her, they fell in love. The man took gertrudis and they went away. Mama Elena didn’t saw gertrudis anymore. Tita didn’t tell the truth to her mother.I really like this chapter because it is very excited and interesting.

Well, Chapter IV talks about when the baby of Gertrudis was took to Baptize. It also talked about when pedro also heard all the movements that tita was doing in the kitchen experiencing a new feelings for him. everything that tita toward the kitchen had raised their sexual instincts of pedro.

CHAPTER #4 – APRIL
(Turkey Mole with Almonds and Sesame Seeds)
I think this chapter is about the baby that is looking desperate their breast milk between Tita. The baby was desperate trying to find the milk in Tita’s breasts. And also that if there was one thing tita could not resist, it was a hungry person asking for food. She knew that her breasts were completely dry, but at least would act as a pacifier and keep him occupied while she decides what to do to calm your hunger.
The baby clamped desperately onto the nipple and he sucked and he sucked. Even, until he sack milk tita’s breasts. Then, she lied to her mom that the baby was taken tea and then slept. But then at the party’s baby, Baptism. The doctor told tita who looked beautiful with the baby. I think that this chapter is important because Tita wants to continue giving their breast milk the baby. But it is impossible because the baby moved to Texas.

This is my summary from chapter #6. This chapter is combined with love and happiness. I don’t like the way mama Elena treated her own daughter because it is a kind of hate, that’s what i think. Dr.brown didn’t put Tita in a madhouse as her mother wanted what’s good but i don’t like it because he is doing all this with interest, he wants to obtain something from this. he wants Tita’s love that’s the only reason of why he is doing all this and I’m pretty sure that he wouldn’t do that for other person. this doctor is taking care of her like when the mother takes care of her Little baby and that’s something that her own mother would never do. he was teaching her a lot of new things that he learned from his family. she started to appreciate the doctorcito ese. she was thinking that she had to find someone who would kindle her desire and the doctor was the perfect candidate. she wasn’t sure. the only thing she was absolutely sure was that she didn’t want to return to her house. she didn’t even wanted to live near to her mama…….

Chapter Six.
(Ox-Tail Soup)
Well, this chapter in very interesting, because in the beginning of this chapter it talk about when Tita was recalling when she was cooking soup with Chencha, they belief that it cure illness. Also it talk, when Chencha went to visit Tita and she prepared a soup to TIta. After eating the soup Tita remembered a little bit of her past and Tita started to talk six moths later, and John Brown was thankful with Chencha . It also talk when Gertrudis sent to Tita a letter thanking to Tita for having sent her all his clothes. Also In a paragraph that said the ranch of Helena was attacked by a group of bandits and Chencha was raped after going to visit Tita. Then Tita decided to visit the ranch to take care of her mother, but Mama Elena did not want to.

CHAPTER #7 – JULY
(Ox-Tail Soup)
This chapter is about Tita recalls that when Checha prepared a soup at the ranch. Recalling that the soup can cure any physical or mental illness. Three months after she tasted soup of Chencha, which had been prepared in the home of Doctor John Brown. She began to recall some of its recent past that had spent at the ranch of Mama Elena. When she began to remember everything, began to cry. When she arrived at the Doctor’s house, she was afraid to speak and after all this time, when she tasted the soup prepared by Chencha, Then Tita lost their fear of speaking.
I think that this chapter is interesting, because all these things that Tita is recalling is a metaphor because, when she took the soup, it is recalled everything and once when she took the soup of Chencha. Tita was able to speak.

Chapter #7-July
Ox-Tail Soup
Well, the main point of this chapter is when Chencha gave Tita a soup and that soup made Tita reborn again.
When Tita was staying at Dr.Brown’s house, she was all sad and weak. She didn’t talk, smile, cry, there was sometimes that she didn’t even eat. One day, Chencha went to visit Tita and prepared her a soup. With that soup Tita remembered when she used to live in the ranch with Nacha, and also remembered Nacha. Dr. brown always tried to cure tita with medecine but nothing helped her, the only thing that made her smile, cry, andre born was the soup that Tita ate.
The other main point was that Mama Elena died.
Well, this is all i remember, have a nice day all of you (all the people that’s reading this message)…bye =]
